Forensic Neuropsychological Evaluations
Forensic or
medical-legal neuropsychological evaluation (a.k.a. neuropsychological IMEs) involves a comprehensive assessment of an individual's cognitive and emotional functioning, as well as personality, in the context of civil or criminal legal proceedings to document, characterize and quantify cognitive problems, if present. In addition, it assesses to what extent an individual's cognitive and emotional challenges could be directly attributed to the incident that prompted legal proceedings. Furthermore, it documents the validity of an individual's self-report of his/her daily functioning; this includes an assessment of effort, response bias and the validity of psychological / psychiatric symptoms using standardized and empirically validated measures and techniques.

Forensic neuropsychological evaluations are instrumental in civil or criminal proceedings that question an individual's cognitive capacity at the time of the alleged crime and/or competence to stand trial.

Older Adults Capacity Assessments
Older adults capacity evaluations are helpful when there are concerns about an individual's ability to drive, live independently and/or make the right decisions about their health care, finances, and/or other areas of their life to ensure their safety and quality of life. It involves comprehensive interviews to obtain information about an individual's medical and/or mental challenges, everyday functioning, risk of harm and ways to enhance capacity within the context of an individual's personal values and preferences. Assessment tools are used to objectively measure functional and thinking abilities as well as the following capacity areas:
  • Medical consent capacity
  • Financial capacity
  • Driving
  • Independent living
An individual is asked to perform a series of pragmatic tasks equivalent to those performed in their home or community by a neuropsychologist, who is trained in the use of standardized assessment tools to identify mental strengths and weaknesses that impact everyday functional abilities. Difficulties speaking, paying attention, understanding what's being said or written, and remembering newly learned information can impact an individual's ability to make the right medical and financial decisions. Impulsive behaviors can lead to poor decisions and choices. A report is generated at the conclusion of the evaluation to offer a
n opinion on the capacity being assessed (yes/no) and recommendations that may help optimize decision-making abilities and/or improve care for the individual.
